Pearl Spring Resort

Park numero uno in Nanjing was in a mountain retreat just outside the main city in the mountains to the west.

The Pearl Spring resort is called so due to the bubbles that rise in the spring and give the appearance of pearls. It's a very historic place that has seen the resort develop around it over the last few decades.

The top part of the resort complex contains the theme park, which was where we spent our morning. There is a single coaster, a horrible double-looping double-corkscrew that looks better with it's velvet restraints than it rides. I always measure how bad these beasts are by how my head gets bounced around in the first turn before engaging the lift hill. This scored pretty badly, but not as bad as the Ninjas. The second loop however did give partial black out, must be a combination of the Gs and the heat though, something to bear in mind on a hot day.

The rest of the park has a fair collection of spin rides, flume, reverse bungee and a reverse alpine slide. Reverse in that you ascend backwards due to the steepness of the slope, before transitioning to a second trough and riding down forwards. I'm not the best rider on these at the best of times and this one was a bit steeper than I'm used to so like Mick Hucknall I rode it gingerly.

The park has a couple of dark rides too, something that hasn't been in abundance on this trip at all. They were OK but noticeably different to the ones in the west in that the things that jump out on you do get close to you. I guess the locals here aren't inclined to destroy the attraction in the same way a British or American teenager would. There was one good scare on the one lower down the mountain, simply because I wasn't ready. Good fun!

This park is across the river from Nanjing to the west. Be careful with the bridges as some are only open to locals and tourist coaches have to go a longer way around. At least that's what happened to us!
